BIAL Teams Up with Sarla Aviation to Launch E-Flying Taxis in Bengaluru
Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) has teamed up with Sarla Aviation to explore innovative eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) solutions for urban mobility. This collaboration aims to alleviate traffic congestion in Bengaluru, providing a faster and sustainable transportation option to Kempegowda International Airport. The initiative could drastically reduce travel time from the city to the airport, making aerial transport as accessible as rideshare services.

Bangalore is on the brink of a transformative shift in urban transportation, with Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) announcing a partnership with Sarla Aviation to explore electric flying taxis, also known as eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) aircraft. This collaboration aims to tackle the city’s notorious traffic congestion and make air travel more efficient and sustainable.

Currently, Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) is situated about 40 kilometers from the heart of Bengaluru, making travel to and from the airport a significant challenge for commuters. BIAL's recent statement indicates a commitment to embracing advanced air mobility solutions developed within Karnataka, highlighting the state's growing importance as a hub for innovation in transportation.

Sarla Aviation has set ambitious goals for its eVTOL aircraft, targeting four of India’s most congested cities: Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, and Pune. The company aims to make aerial ride-sharing as affordable and accessible as current ride-hailing options, such as Uber and Ola. According to Sarla Aviation, the journey from the airport to Electronics City could take just 19 minutes at a fare of ₹1,700, in stark contrast to the typical 152-minute drive by premium taxi services costing around ₹2,500 for the same distance.

Adrian Schmidt, the co-founder and CEO of Sarla Aviation, expressed pride in the partnership with BIAL, emphasizing its potential to address Bengaluru’s congestion challenges. He noted that current travel times from areas like Indiranagar to the airport can stretch to over an hour and a half, but the introduction of fully electric flying taxis could reduce this to a mere five minutes. This initiative is not just about technological advancement; it aims to redefine transportation norms and enhance quality of life for citizens.

While this project presents exciting prospects, BIAL representatives have indicated that operational eVTOL services are likely two to three years away. The eVTOL ecosystem, including necessary regulatory approvals, still requires significant development. Both BIAL and Sarla Aviation must navigate a series of steps, including building a prototype and ensuring it can safely integrate into existing air traffic without affecting commercial airspace.

Past attempts at similar ventures, such as the intracity heli-taxi services launched by Thumby Aviation and Blade India, faced challenges due to low usage rates. However, the advantages offered by eVTOL aircraft could provide a more viable solution. These electric aircraft boast cleaner and quieter operations than conventional helicopters, which rely on aviation turbine fuel and incur high maintenance costs. This shift toward electric propulsion not only enhances efficiency but also aligns with broader sustainability goals.

Additionally, global interest in eVTOL technology is growing, with various companies exploring opportunities in the Indian market. For instance, California-based Archer has signed agreements to bring electric air taxis to India by 2026, contingent upon regulatory approval. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has recently issued guidelines regarding airworthiness standards for VTOL aircraft, marking a significant step forward for the industry.

As this partnership unfolds, it reflects a growing recognition of the need for innovative solutions to urban transportation challenges. By leveraging advanced air mobility technologies, Bengaluru aims to set a precedent for other cities grappling with similar issues. With the backing of local authorities and the ambition of startups like Sarla Aviation, the future of urban travel could soon be soaring to new heights.
