Ayushman Card Eligibility: Updated Rules and How to Apply
The Ayushman Card, part of the Ayushman Bharat scheme, now includes more beneficiaries. Learn about the updated eligibility criteria and the application process.

The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), commonly referred to as the Ayushman Bharat scheme, continues to enhance healthcare access for vulnerable populations in India. Recent updates to the eligibility criteria for the Ayushman Card aim to extend financial protection to a broader group, covering medical treatment costs up to ₹5 lakh per family annually.

The Ayushman Card is a pivotal element of the Ayushman Bharat scheme, providing eligible families with free healthcare services at empanelled hospitals throughout the country. With coverage up to ₹5 lakh per year, this card significantly alleviates the financial burden associated with secondary and tertiary medical care, allowing families to focus on health rather than financial strain.

Key Changes in Eligibility

The recent modifications to the eligibility criteria have made the Ayushman Card more inclusive:

  • Migrant Workers Now Covered: Migrant workers, who often face barriers in accessing healthcare, can now apply for the Ayushman Card at their current locations, ensuring they receive the medical attention they need.
  • More Urban Beneficiaries: Workers in the informal sector in urban areas, such as domestic help, daily wage earners, and street vendors, are now eligible. This change recognizes that many of these workers do not have employer-provided insurance and thus are in greater need of free healthcare services.
  • Inclusion of Rural Vulnerable Communities: Landless labourers, rural artisans, and other low-income groups have been added to the scheme, ensuring that the most vulnerable segments of the population receive necessary healthcare.
  • Special Focus on Women and Children: The updated eligibility criteria prioritize households led by widows, single women, orphaned children, and those with disabled individuals, recognizing their heightened vulnerability.
  • Elderly and Disabled Individuals Included: The inclusion of elderly and disabled individuals acknowledges the typically higher medical expenses they face, ensuring they have access to necessary health services.

How to Apply for the Ayushman Card

Eligible individuals can apply for the Ayushman Card through a straightforward process:

  • Check Eligibility: Start by visiting the official Ayushman Bharat portal. Here, you can verify your eligibility by entering basic personal details.
  • Application Submission: Applicants can submit their application at empanelled hospitals or Common Service Centers (CSCs) conveniently located across the country.
  • Required Identification: To complete the application process, ensure you have the necessary identification documents, such as an Aadhaar card or ration card.

The Ayushman Card represents a crucial step towards universal healthcare in India, offering financial protection to millions who previously lacked access. By expanding eligibility criteria and simplifying the application process, the scheme aims to create a more inclusive healthcare system that addresses the needs of the most vulnerable populations.
