Atishi Set to Become Delhi's New Chief Minister, Replacing Arvind Kejriwal
Atishi Marlena is set to take over as the Chief Minister of Delhi, following Arvind Kejriwal's decision to resign. The announcement came after Kejriwal, who was released on bail in the liquor policy case, proposed Atishi as his successor during an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislative party meeting. Atishi, currently overseeing 11 portfolios including finance, education, and PWD, will be the youngest-ever Chief Minister of Delhi. AAP leader Gopal Rai confirmed that Atishi will lead the party until the next assembly elections scheduled for February 2025. Kejriwal's resignation follows his arrest by the CBI and ED in connection with the alleged liquor policy scam. The Delhi assembly is set to hold a special session on September 26-27 to formalize the transition.

On September 17, 2024, Delhi's political landscape saw a significant shift as Arvind Kejriwal announced his resignation as Chief Minister, paving the way for Kalkaji MLA Atishi Marlena to become the new leader of Delhi. This decision follows Kejriwal's recent release on bail in the high-profile liquor policy case.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convened a crucial legislative party meeting on September 17, where Kejriwal proposed Atishi as his successor. The proposal was accepted, and Atishi was elected as the leader of the AAP Delhi Legislative Party. This marks a pivotal moment in Delhi's politics, with Atishi poised to become the youngest-ever Chief Minister of the city.

AAP leader and minister Gopal Rai confirmed that Atishi would lead the party until the next assembly elections, scheduled for February 2025. Rai also mentioned that the party prefers the elections to be held earlier, ideally in October or November 2024.

Atishi Marlena: The New Chief Minister

Atishi Marlena, known simply as Atishi, is currently managing 11 portfolios in the Kejriwal-led government. Her responsibilities include crucial departments such as finance, education, and public works. This extensive portfolio highlights her significant role in the current administration. Atishi has become a prominent face of AAP, especially during recent turbulent times when both Kejriwal and former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia were in custody related to the liquor policy case.

Arvind Kejriwal's Resignation

Arvind Kejriwal, who first became Chief Minister of Delhi in 2013, had announced his resignation earlier this year. His resignation follows his release on bail by the Supreme Court on September 13, 2024. Kejriwal was arrested on June 26 by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with an alleged excise policy scam, while he was already in custody of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for a related money laundering case.

Kejriwal's resignation marks the end of a notable tenure. He initially resigned in February 2014, only to return with a commanding victory in the 2015 assembly elections, securing 67 out of 70 seats. His party, AAP, retained power in 2020 with another strong mandate. Despite the challenges faced during his term, Kejriwal's leadership has significantly influenced Delhi's political and administrative landscape.

Transition and Future Outlook

The Delhi assembly is scheduled to hold a special session on September 26-27 to formalize Atishi’s appointment and address any legislative requirements for the transition. As Atishi steps into the role of Chief Minister, her leadership will be closely watched as she navigates the challenges ahead and prepares for the upcoming assembly elections.

The transition of leadership in Delhi marks a significant chapter in the city's political narrative. Atishi Marlena's appointment as Chief Minister reflects the AAP's strategic response to recent political developments and the party's preparation for future electoral challenges. With Kejriwal stepping down amidst legal battles, Atishi's role will be pivotal in steering the administration and maintaining the party's momentum as Delhi moves towards the next assembly elections.
