Jharkhand BJP President and former Chief Minister, Babulal Marandi, expressed confidence that Champai Soren's entry into the BJP will boost the party's performance in the upcoming assembly elections. In a conversation with ET, Marandi discussed the party's strategies, campaigns, alliances, and the challenges they face ahead of the elections.

Addressing Concerns Over Soren's Entry

When asked about rumors of dissatisfaction regarding Champai Soren joining the party, Marandi dismissed them. He clarified that discussions about Soren's potential involvement began within the BJP soon after he was removed as Chief Minister. The party recognized Soren's feelings of humiliation and extended a welcoming hand.

Strengthening the BJP in Kolhan Region

Marandi highlighted that Champai Soren, a prominent figure in the Jharkhand movement alongside Shibu Soren, will strengthen the BJP in the Kolhan region. While the BJP struggled in the area during the last assembly elections, Marandi is optimistic that Soren's influence, coupled with the BJP's presence, will lead to better results this time around.

Balancing Outsiders and Party Loyalty

Marandi acknowledged that it's natural for long-time party workers to feel uneasy when leaders from other parties join the BJP. However, he emphasized that BJP workers are committed to the party's ideology, with a focus on the nation first. He assured that while not everyone can get a chance to contest elections, this won't create major issues within the party.

Countering Hemant Soren's Sympathy

Regarding the sympathy that Hemant Soren has garnered after his jail time, Marandi was clear. He pointed out that Soren didn't go to jail as a freedom fighter but due to a corruption case. Although the JMM gained some benefit in tribal areas during the Lok Sabha elections, Marandi believes that the focus should now be on Soren's governance record over the past four and a half years, particularly unfulfilled promises such as pensions and financial aid to women and the elderly.
