The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections for 2024 have captured the attention of the entire nation, heralding a crucial chapter in the region's political landscape. Conducted over three phases on September 18, September 25, and October 1, the elections encompass all 90 constituencies. As the results are set to be announced on October 8, the political implications of these elections are monumental, particularly as they are the first following the revocation of Article 370 in August 2019. This historic change resulted in the bifurcation of the erstwhile state into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
The importance of this election cannot be overstated. The National Conference and the People's Democratic Party (PDP) faced off against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which contested independently, while the Congress entered the race as a coalition. The elections have witnessed an impressive voter turnout of 63.88 percent across all phases, marking a significant increase from the 58.58 percent recorded during the previous Lok Sabha elections. This surge in voter participation suggests a renewed engagement among the electorate in Jammu and Kashmir, reflecting a desire for active involvement in the democratic process.
As the clock ticks toward the vote-counting day, scheduled to begin at 8 AM on October 8, anticipation fills the air. The counting process is expected to wrap up by 6 PM the same day. The Election Commission has put in place robust measures to ensure a transparent and secure counting procedure. The counting will kick off with postal ballots, which are designated for specific voter groups, including individuals with disabilities, security personnel, and government officials tasked with essential services.
Supervised by the Returning Officer, the counting takes place at designated government schools and colleges, fortified by high-security forces. Following the tallying of postal ballots, the votes recorded in Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will be counted. The Election Commission has provided a comprehensive overview of the voter turnout throughout the election phases, revealing a breakdown of participation: 64.68 percent among male voters, 63.04 percent among female voters, and 38.24 percent turnout for the third gender.
The final vote count will emerge after tallying the postal ballots, which encompass votes from service voters, absentee voters (those aged 85 and older, individuals with disabilities, and those engaged in essential services), as well as voters on election duty. The Election Commission adheres to strict guidelines, ensuring that a daily account of these ballots is made available to all candidates involved.
As the results are announced, each constituency will see its victor declared based on India’s first-past-the-post electoral system. The candidate receiving the highest number of votes in each constituency will be deemed the winner. This election marks a crucial juncture for Jammu and Kashmir, paving the way for future political dynamics in the region.

As voters wait with bated breath, the implications of this election resonate far beyond the counting centers, impacting the socio-political landscape of the entire region.
