As the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election draws to a close, Republican candidate Donald Trump is poised to make history by breaking a 132-year-old record. After losing his bid for re-election in 2020, Trump, the former president from 2017 to 2021, is on the brink of securing a second term, which would make him the second U.S. president to achieve non-consecutive terms. The only other president to do so was Grover Cleveland, who served as the 22nd and 24th president, from 1885-1889 and 1893-1897.
Trump's campaign has been marked by his strong performance in pivotal swing states, including Georgia and Pennsylvania, which are crucial to his victory. These states are key to his path to the White House, and winning them would give him the electoral votes needed to secure the presidency once more. Trump’s return would be particularly historic, as it would make him the first Republican candidate to win the presidency in non-consecutive terms.
The parallels between Donald Trump and Grover Cleveland are striking. Both men were from New York, and neither had held a prior position in the federal government or Congress before becoming president. In fact, both pitched themselves as political outsiders, positioning themselves as reformers ready to tackle Washington’s "corruption." Cleveland, like Trump, was able to secure a second term after an initial loss, creating a notable political comeback.

While Cleveland triumphed in 1892 against Benjamin Harrison, having won the popular vote, Trump’s path has been slightly different. In 2016, Trump won the presidency despite losing the popular vote to Hillary Clinton by nearly three million votes. In 2024, he is expected to defeat Vice-President Kamala Harris, further cementing his place in history.
Trump’s campaign team remains confident, even as some ballots are still being counted. Although he has already secured a strong position in the electoral race, the final results are yet to be confirmed. If he secures the presidency once again, Trump will continue to face challenges similar to those that confronted his first term, including the dynamic political landscape and intense partisan divisions in the U.S.

While the comparisons between Trump and Cleveland hold significant historical weight, Trump’s own journey to the presidency is uniquely marked by his outsider status and the unprecedented nature of his campaigns.
