The much-awaited Dharavi Redevelopment Project, which aims to transform nearly 600 acres in Mumbai, is poised to begin construction within the next 6-8 months. This announcement was made by SVR Srinivas, CEO of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) and the Slum Rehabilitation Authority of Maharashtra.
Project Overview and Timeline
Srinivas highlighted that the ongoing survey to determine the eligibility of tenement residents is expected to conclude by the end of March. To date, over 10,000 tenements have been surveyed. The data gathered will be instrumental in establishing rehabilitation eligibility criteria for the project.
Land Acquisition and Planning
The Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRPPL), a collaboration between the Adani Group and the Maharashtra government, requires approximately 540 acres of land across Mumbai for rehabilitation purposes. As of now, DRPPL has only received railway land, with around 27 out of 45 acres of prime railway property in Matunga and Mahim already acquired.
A comprehensive master plan for the redevelopment is currently in development, which includes detailed layout and infrastructure planning. The project will focus on 296 acres of the 600-acre area, excluding open spaces such as Mahim Nature Park and Koliwadas.
International Expertise and Partners
To ensure the success of this massive redevelopment initiative, DRPPL has enlisted the help of renowned international city and infrastructure planning experts. The project team includes the US-based design firm Sasaki, the UK-headquartered consultancy Buro Happold, and architect Hafeez Contractor. Additionally, experts from Singapore have joined the team to contribute to the project’s planning and execution.

Dharavi’s Population and Redevelopment Impact
Dharavi, known for its staggering population density of 354,167 per square kilometer, is the most densely populated area in Mumbai, which is itself the world's sixth most densely populated city. The area is home to over 850,000 residents, with the transient population pushing this figure beyond one million. Despite the high density, Dharavi is a vibrant melting pot, housing over 85 diverse communities.
In November 2022, the Adani Group emerged as the successful bidder for the redevelopment rights. Adani Group holds an 80% stake in DRPPL, with the Maharashtra government holding the remaining 20%. The involvement of international experts aims to reimagine one of the largest informal settlements globally, creating a sustainable and improved living environment for its residents.
Conclusion:
The Dharavi Redevelopment Project is a significant undertaking that promises to reshape one of Mumbai’s most challenging yet vibrant neighborhoods. With a clear timeline, strategic land acquisition, and international expertise, the project aims to provide a new lease on life for the residents of Dharavi while addressing the complexities of urban redevelopment.
