Samsung is emerging as the leading contender to secure a significant network contract from Vodafone Idea (Vi), potentially valued at around $70 million (₹600 crore). This deal, set to replace Chinese 4G network equipment in key telecom circles, marks a notable achievement for Samsung, surpassing European giants Nokia and Ericsson in the competitive Indian telecom market.
The contract would see Samsung supplying telecom equipment for Vodafone Idea's operations in Punjab, Bihar, Odisha, and Karnataka. The deal includes logistics and labour costs and is expected to bolster Samsung's presence in the Indian telecom sector. Negotiations are still ongoing, but both parties are moving towards finalizing the agreement.
This potential partnership represents a crucial step for Vodafone Idea, which has been working to replace Chinese network gear due to government restrictions on 5G rollout in areas where Chinese equipment is present. The transition to new equipment would facilitate the launch of 5G services in these regions, aligning with the telco's broader network upgrade strategy.

Samsung's aggressive bid for the contract includes pushing for bank guarantees and letters of credit to ensure timely payment and minimize financial risks associated with the gear swaps. The final deal could expand further to include additional 4G and 5G network equipment, enhancing Samsung's foothold in the Indian telecom market.
If successful, this contract would be a significant win for Samsung, particularly after missing out on previous 5G deals with competitors like Nokia and Ericsson. The move could provide a substantial boost to Samsung's global networks business, compensating for recent setbacks where major Indian telecom operators favoured European vendors for their 5G infrastructure needs.
For Vodafone Idea, partnering with Samsung would not only address immediate network upgrade requirements but also pave the way for future 5G expansions in crucial markets. The telco, which recently raised ₹24,000 crore in equity, is poised to enhance its network capabilities significantly.
