India's tourism sector is poised for a remarkable transformation, with its contribution to the national economy expected to surpass the global average of 10.4% within the next five years. Currently contributing 7.9% to the Indian economy, the tourism sector is set for significant growth as the government actively seeks to tap into its untapped potential, according to Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.
A Vision for Tourism in 2047
Speaking at The Economic Times World Leaders Forum, Shekhawat highlighted the importance of tourism in realizing India's long-term vision, "Viksit Bharat" (Developed India) by 2047. He stated, "By 2047 when the vision of Viksit Bharat will be realized, tourism will play a pivotal role in driving that vision. The world is looking at India with renewed curiosity and interest."
Tourism currently contributes about 10.4% to the global economy, but India's share stands at 7.9%. However, Shekhawat is confident that India's tourism contribution will exceed the global average in the next five years. He emphasized that the government is working diligently to enhance tourist experiences, attract more international visitors, and encourage longer stays in the country.
Revamping India's Tourism Landscape
To achieve this ambitious goal, the government is rolling out several new initiatives aimed at improving the overall experience for tourists. The focus is on creating new tourism trails, introducing unique experiences, and encouraging investment from private players. Shekhawat mentioned that public-private partnership models are being considered to promote tourism across various states.
"In a post-COVID world, people's travel preferences have evolved significantly. They are increasingly interested in exploring the cultural diversity of their own country. Our objective is to cater to these changing needs and preferences," Shekhawat stated. The minister also noted that domestic tourism is witnessing rapid growth, driven by an aspirational middle class that is eager to explore the vast cultural heritage and natural beauty of India.
States Competing for Tourists
India's states are also keenly competing to attract more tourists, both domestic and international. "In India, 65% of all inbound tourists visit seven key states, with the flow typically starting in Rajasthan and ending in Delhi. However, healthy competition is emerging among states to further boost tourism numbers," Shekhawat said. This competitive spirit is evident as states strive to offer unique experiences and better infrastructure to draw in more visitors.
The tourism minister highlighted the growing interest among states to attract tourists, emphasizing the various initiatives being undertaken to boost tourism numbers. "Since I took over, I have had the opportunity to interact with representatives from different states. There is a clear drive among them to attract more tourists and boost their local economies," he added.
Infrastructure and Connectivity Improvements
India's tourism growth is not limited to traditional attractions but is also supported by significant improvements in infrastructure and connectivity. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, India has made substantial progress in the last decade. More than 150,000 kilometres of highways have been developed, new railway tracks have been laid, and electrification of rail routes has been completed. High-speed trains like Vande Bharat are now operational, transforming the railway experience for travellers.
Additionally, India's aviation sector has seen remarkable growth, with the number of airports doubling and airline passenger numbers soaring. "India has transformed its aviation industry. The number of airports has doubled, and the number of airline passengers has increased dramatically," Shekhawat pointed out.
Economic Reforms and Future Growth Prospects
India's progress is also reflected in its financial metrics. Shekhawat cited international reports that have raised India's GDP growth forecast to 7.2% for 2024. "India has progressed rapidly in the last ten years under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership. Moody's has increased India's GDP growth forecast to 7.2% for 2024. The Prime Minister's reforms have significantly uplifted the poor, with reports indicating that around 25 crore people have been lifted out of poverty," he said.
The minister reiterated that India's tourism sector is on the rise, fueled by a combination of improved infrastructure, government initiatives, and changing travel preferences. "India is climbing the popularity charts, and the world is taking notice," he concluded.
The Road Ahead: A Bright Future for Indian Tourism
India's tourism sector is on the cusp of a major transformation. The government's commitment to enhancing infrastructure, developing new tourism products, and fostering partnerships with private players is expected to drive growth in the coming years. With a focus on both domestic and international tourism, India is well-positioned to surpass the global average contribution to the economy and establish itself as a premier travel destination.
