In a historic appointment, Vice Admiral Arti Sarin became the first woman to take over as the Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS) on October 1, 2024. Commissioned into the Armed Forces in 1985, she holds postgraduate degrees in Radiodiagnosis and Radiation Oncology and has received advanced training in Gamma Knife Surgery, a technique used to treat brain tumours and other conditions with precision radiation therapy. Her medical expertise and leadership have earned her a reputation as a highly respected figure within the Armed Forces Medical community.
In July 2024, her exceptional service was recognized with the prestigious Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), presented by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu. This honor reflects her contributions not only to the Armed Forces but also to the medical field at large, highlighting her as a pioneer in advancing military healthcare standards.
