As the Israel-Iran conflict escalates, airlines around the globe are grappling with a dual challenge: soaring fuel prices and the need to reroute flights due to the closure of airspace over conflict zones. These disruptions are expected to significantly increase operational expenses, likely leading to higher airfares, as analysts warn of rising costs for travellers.
The ongoing conflict in West Asia has prompted airlines to adjust their routes and suspend certain flights. Indian carriers, particularly Air India, have already taken precautionary measures by cancelling flights to and from Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport, prioritizing passenger safety amid the rising tensions. An Air India spokesperson emphasized that flight routes are assessed daily for any potential security risks, and adjustments will be made as needed.

The challenges faced by airlines echo those experienced during the Ukraine-Russia conflict, where airlines had to avoid Ukrainian and Russian airspace, leading to significant alterations in flight paths and increased operational costs. As a result, airlines are closely monitoring the situation, which is impacting flight times and schedules across the globe.
Travelers can expect rising airfares as fuel prices surge, with industry experts predicting at least a 10-20% increase in ticket prices over the coming month. With the holiday season approaching, this situation poses further challenges for airlines, which are already stretched thin due to post-pandemic recovery efforts.
Other global carriers, including KLM, Qatar Airways, and British Airways, are also rerouting flights and adjusting operations in response to the conflict. For instance, Finnair has announced changes to its flight paths, indicating longer travel times for passengers.
