Russia-Ukraine War: Kyiv Hit with 200 Missiles and Drones After 9/11-Style Ukrainian Attack

In a dramatic escalation of the ongoing conflict, Russia unleashed a massive assault on Ukraine on Monday, deploying approximately 200 missiles and drones in a coordinated attack. This latest barrage resulted in the tragic loss of seven lives and inflicted significant damage on critical infrastructure across the nation. The attacks targeted energy facilities, leading to widespread power and water outages in numerous regions, including the capital city of Kyiv. According to Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, the strikes affected more than half of Ukraine’s regions, impacting at least 15 areas across the country.

Since March, Russia has markedly intensified its attacks on Ukraine’s power grid. Ukrainian officials have characterized these strikes as part of a deliberate strategy to weaken the country’s energy infrastructure ahead of the coming winter. The aim, according to Kyiv, seems to be to degrade the power system when the need for electricity and heating will be at its peak.

President Volodymyr Zelensky described the recent assault as one of the most significant combined strikes to date, involving over a hundred missiles of various types and around a hundred drones. He criticized the attack as "sneaky," with a focus on critical civilian infrastructure. The President condemned the strikes as "vile" and noted that they targeted a broad swath of the country, from the Kharkiv region in the east to Odesa in the south and as far west as the western regions of Ukraine.

In response to the barrage, Ukraine's air defence forces reported substantial success in intercepting the incoming threats. Ukrainian Air Force commanders revealed that they managed to shoot down 102 out of 127 missiles and 99 out of 109 drones launched by Russian forces. Despite these efforts, the scale of the attack underscored the severity of the threat faced by Ukraine.

Amidst the ongoing crisis, Ukrainian officials have called on their Western allies to provide support for long-range strikes into Russian territory. President Zelensky has also urged allies, including Poland, to assist in intercepting missiles and drones within Ukrainian airspace. This appeal for increased support comes as Kyiv continues to grapple with the impacts of the relentless Russian bombardments.

Russia’s Ministry of Defense has defended the strikes, asserting that the use of high-precision weapons was aimed at critical energy infrastructure which, according to their claims, supports Ukraine’s military-industrial complex. The targeted facilities included power substations, gas compressor stations, and storage sites for aircraft weapons.

The attacks were not limited to a specific region but spanned various parts of Ukraine. Reports of damage to power and critical infrastructure have come from Rivne and Volyn in the northwest, Khmelnytsk in the southwest, Zhytomyr in the north, Lviv in the west, and several central regions including Dnipropetrovsk, Kirovohrad, and Vinnytsia. In the southeast, Zaporizhzhia was also hit, along with the southern city of Odesa.

In a related development, Poland reported that a drone, potentially originating from the recent Russian bombardment, had entered its airspace early on Monday. Polish officials are investigating whether the drone landed on Polish territory, though weather conditions have complicated the ability to visually identify the object and determine its origin.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry confirmed that a hydropower plant in Kyiv was among the facilities targeted. Additionally, in the northeastern Sumy region, which has been a flashpoint for recent incursions into Russia, authorities reported damage to railway infrastructure. The human toll of the attacks includes at least seven fatalities, with a 69-year-old man in Dnipropetrovsk and another individual in Zaporizhzhia among the deceased. Additionally, 47 people, including four children, have been reported injured.

In a parallel incident, Russian officials reported a Ukrainian drone attack overnight that resulted in four injuries. Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed that 22 Ukrainian drones were intercepted over eight provinces, highlighting the ongoing exchanges of aerial assaults between the two nations.

The latest developments underscore the intensifying nature of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, with both sides engaged in a relentless battle that is significantly impacting civilian life and infrastructure.
