At least 51 people were killed and 235 wounded when Russia launched a devastating attack on a military institute in Poltava, Ukraine, on Tuesday. This incident marks the deadliest single attack of the ongoing conflict in 2024. The assault, which involved two ballistic missiles, targeted the Military Institute of Communications, resulting in extensive damage and casualties.
Images circulating on social media depict bodies of young men amidst dust and debris, with a heavily damaged building in the background. The Ukrainian government has not yet confirmed the identities of the victims, but preliminary reports suggest that some may have been cadets or mobilized individuals in training.
President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack, labelling it a heinous act and calling for a thorough investigation. He vowed that those responsible would be held accountable. In response to the tragedy, rescue operations are ongoing, with emergency services working to locate and assist those trapped under the rubble. Poltava's regional governor, Filip Pronin, reported that about 15 people may still be trapped, with search efforts conducted every 15-20 minutes.
